Why is my ankle sprain causing tingling in my foot?

This is a very common refrain from people. Typically some people after an ankle sprain about 2-6 days afterwards get tingling sensations eminating from their ankle down to their foot.  Is this normal? Yes. Then what is causing it?  Simple if you sprained your ankle you no doubt have swelling in the ankle.  Swelling is a pooling of fluid. This fluid and swelling then combines to compress the nerve.  This compression on the nerve leads to the tingling sensation from the pressure placed on the nerve fibers.  Thus you get tingling.  The best way to get rid of the tingling is to reduce the swelling.  This can be done by:

1.  Elevating the leg above your heart

2.  Placing some form of compressive wrapping on the ankle to squeeze the fluid out

3.  Ice or warm compress at the ankle

Once the swelling is gone the tingling should dissipate.  If you are 4-6 weeks out and still having tingling you need to see a Podiatrist, so make an appointment.
