What is the difference between a surgical and non surgical Podiatrist?

The public often gets confused when it comes to Podiatrists in that there are some Podiatrists that do surgery and other podiatrists that do not do surgery.  What is the difference between Podiatrists that do surgery and Podiatrists that do not do surgery? The answer is actually simple: Podiatrists that do surgery have done a traditional three year surgical residency, and have passed the standards to allow them to perform surgery in that area.  Now non surgical Podiatrists are Podiatrists that are not surgically trained or have chosen not to perform surgery.  So what problems can non surgical Podiatrists treat? The answer is most anything as long as it does not require surgery.  So, if you are looking for bunion surgery do not see a non surgical Podiatrist.  But if you have plantar fasciitis, ingrown toenails, or toenail fungus you are fine to see a Non Surgical Podiatrist.  Most Non Surgical Podiatrists have a surgical podiatrist that they work with for referrals, so you should have no fear about seeing a Podiatrist.
