How old do you have to be to have bunion surgery?

A common questions asked by teenagers and kids of all ages, is how old do you have to be to have bunion surgery? Is there a minimum age requirement? The answer is yes and no.  You can have bunion surgery at any age, however it is best to wait until you are 18.  Why is best that you wait? Because the bones and your feet, specifically the first metatarsal, does not stop growing until that age. It is safer to have the operation at that time.  There are operations that can be done at younger ages but the operations encounter greater risk. An injury to the growth plate can cause permanent issues.  So, unless you have a severe bunion that is effecting you every day, it is a good idea to wait until you are 18 to have bunion surgery.
