How do I determine if I broke a bone in my foot?

Did you fall? Did someone kick you?  Did you jump and hear a snap? Now you are asking the question: Did I break a bone in my foot?  Is there anyway to tell without going to the Podiatrist? The answer is the only sure way to tell if you broke your foot, is to proceed to the Podiatrist and have an X ray.  That is the 100% clear cut way to tell.  But, how can you tell just sitting there?  After all, your foot is not misshapen.  There are some easy ways to tell:

Did you hear a snap? This one is obvious but broken bones do have a habit of making a sound.  However, sometimes a snap can just be a ligament tearing as well. A snap does not mean anything as far as whether you have a broken bone.

How swollen is your foot?  Feet with broken bones will typically swell up enough that you cannot get your shoe or sneaker on.  One caveat, though, is that severe sprains can also do the same thing.

Is the foot blistering from the swelling?  If yes, you have a fracture blister. Go to the Podiatrist now!

Can you bear weight on it?  It is almost impossible to bear weight on a fractured foot without having a great deal of pain. With a sprain you will be able to bear weight but have an exaggerated limp.

What if my foot is broken then what?  That depends on the bone, the location and a host of other factors.  But simply, here are the possible outcomes:

Six weeks in walking boot like this:

Six weeks in a cast:

Surgery

and with a lot of that crutches, although there are some popular alternatives to crutches now:
