Five Common Myths of Flat Feet

There are a ton of myths out there about flat feet. I mean a ton.  For example, yes you can serve in the military with flat feet but I am going to focus on some of the larger myths about flat feet out there.

5. Flat feet means I will never walk normal, or Flat feet are pathologic.  Flat feet are not pathologic. They are also normal and common.  Thousands of people have Flat feet in this country and lots of them live their entire lives without ever having a problem with flat feet.  Do not think just because you have flat feet you have to see someone for them and get it corrected.  If you have no pain or discomfort from flat feet you are fine.  Flat feet are only an issue if you have problems with them.

4. Orthotics always work for flat feet. While orthotics are a great idea for flatfeet, they are not a requirement and not some magic bullet.  While orthotics are advisable they are not required.  Also, do not give up if one orthotic does not work for you. You may have to try 2 or 3 orthotics before you find an orthotic that is right for you.

3.  Exercises work and will build an arch.  No they will not.  There are none, ZERO, exercises that help flat feet. There is no evidence or indications these are successful.  Do not waste your time.

2. The shoes I wore caused my flat feet.  Nope, flat feet are genetic. Now there are some tendon injuries and such that can traumatically cause flat feet such as injuries to the Tibialis Posterior Tendon, but no, Flat feet are not caused by shoes.  Also, shoes really do not help treat flat feet as well.

1. Surgery is a bad idea. It does not work.  Now first off you should try multiple pairs of orthotics and maybe even a brace before having surgery. Surgery can be successful but should only be performed in cases where multiple conservative therapies have failed and you are having constant pain such that it effects your life.  Also, there is an implant on the market that is being pushed for flat feet called the Hypcure. Do not have that done. It does not work.
