Does Ultrasound work for Neuromas or Stump Neuromas?

Neuromas are a painful swelling of the nerve typically occuring in the third interspace and termed a Moron’s Neuroma.  Neuromas feel like you are walking with a mass in your foot and they hurt.  There are many treatments for Neuromas including surgery, injections and pads.  Ultrasound should not be the first treatment that you attempt for your neuroma.  In fact it should be your 4th or 5th, as there are other treatments that are less expensive and easier.

Ultrasound treatment should only be attempted after exhausting a couple of the previous treatments stated above.  But, if you have have failed multiple treatments including surgery.  Then, yes ultrasound is a viable option in treating Morton’s Neuromas.  The ultrasound functions by emitting ultrasound waves through the skin, which causes micro trauma to the nerve stimulating healing and helping replace the chronic tissue on the nerve with healthier tissue.  The treatments have been used in carpal tunnel and tennis elbow as well successfully.  The treatments only take 10-20 minutes twice a day and are painless.  These treatments can be performed while watching TV. There are multiple units you can use.  They all essentially do the same thing.  You may want to see if your insurace will cover the treatments at a physical therapists office before buying a machine.   Here are a couple machines for sale on Amazon:
