Does Medicaid cover Bunion Surgery?

A common question patients ask Podiatrists and Primary Care doctors is does Medicaid cover Bunion Surgery. Bunions can be extremely painful and make it difficult to walk and work. So obviously it would make a lot of sense for Medicaid to cover bunion surgery. That however, is not the case. Medicaid is a state by state run program. While Medicaid covers bunion surgery in West Virginian it does not in other states. Now one thing to keep in mind, sometimes Medicaid doesn’t cover bunion surgery by Podiatrists but will cover bunion surgery by Orthopeadic surgeons, which is the case in a state like New York. So the key is to go to the Medicaid plan website and look up if it covers bunion surgery and does it cover the surgery by Orthopedists or Podiatrists. It is probably safe to say more than half the states will cover bunion surgery.
