A very common question and concern that Podiatrists get is can you get warts by going barefoot in the shower or at a locker room. The answer essentially is yes and no. While it is theoretically possible to get warts from going barefoot at the shower or locker room at the local YMCA, the actual chances are extremely low. Generally warts are spread by repeated contact, such as from a brother or sister who spreads the virus. The idea that one isolated encounter with the HPV virus will lead to warts is low, but it is possible and does happen. Something like athletes foot is far more likely to be caught by going barefoot in the shower. So the answer to the question is yes you can get warts from going barefoot in the shower and locker room and generally speaking it is smart to wear slippers.
