Can Diabetics Have Bunion Surgery?

A common question that is frequently asked by Diabetics is can I have Bunion Surgery?  And that answer is… it depends.  The answer depends on various factors unique to situations for Diabetics.  Now there are some situations where Diabetics having bunion surgery is horribly bad idea, they are:

1.  Poor Blood Sugar Control- Listen, if you have poor control of your blood sugars you have bigger fish to fry than a bunion.  Additionally, the poor blood sugars will lead to an increased risk of infection and poor healing.

2. Advanced Age-  If you are over 60 and Diabetic it is a bad idea to have bunion surgery. In all honesty a really bad idea.  You are at an increased risk of complications as well as  poor healing and skin integrity.

3.  Ulceration- If you have one opening on your foot, do not make a second. That is common sense.

4. Smoking- This is a definitive no.  If you are diabetic and smoke and have bunion surgery you are asking to lose your big toe.  Smoking and Diabetes combined effects on healing are very very bad.

Now, if none of those traits apply to you, you could be a candidate to have bunion surgery.  But why would you have Bunion Surgery?  Here are some possible reasons for a Diabetic to have bunion surgery:

1. The Bunion hurts-  If the bunion is affecting your everyday life and causing you pain, have the bunion surgery. If you are a well controlled diabetic the risks would be just a little higher than the general population.

2. The Bunion can lead to ulceration-  This is a legit reason to have bunion surgery.  The fact is the bunion prominence leads to an increased risk of an ulceration appearing in the area.  One way to nip that in the bud is to have bunion surgery and have the prominence removed.
