Everybody who gets an ingrown toenail hears the horror story of their friend who got an ingrown toenail and the infection got into the bone leading to a toe amputation. Is this an actual possible outcome from ingrown toenail surgery? The answer is 99.9999% of ingrown toenails do not go to the extreme of a toe amputation. First off, if you are not diabetic or have some pre-existing co-morbidity the chances of the infection getting into the bone is literally zero. However, if you are diabetic or have a pre-existing morbidity just call a Podiatrist and get it taken care of, it is not that hard.
