Dr. Blanies Scar Gel Pads 7.5/10:
Like others have said, it works… just be patient. I had surgery on my wrist and had an ugly, red, bulgy scar. I followed the instructions and used the Vitamin E stuff along with the gel pad. Make sure you don’t use them together… the pad sticks to CLEAN DRY skin. (use the Vitamin E at night and the pad during the day… If you have the pad on at night it will get lost…
I have tried several other products from other manufacturers. At first I didn’t think I’d like the intense adhesiveness of this gel pad but found that if you can place and leave it alone, the strip of pad can last well over one week. If you cut the pads to just slightly over the width of your scar, this can be an economical product. Since I paid $40.00 at my Doctor’s office for just one box, I think the price on Amazon is outstanding. Silicone gel pads of various types have been around for well over 20 years but they use to be for the use of Doctors only and nearly 1/4 thick (BioGel)! Glad they learned that the thickness is not important, although compression can assist in preventing hypertrophic scaring and to more quickly blanch the redness out of a scar. Gentle massage can also help soften a scar. The real trick is getting the silicone to stick and stay in place. For an arm or leg, buy rolls of medical “netting” which will act to keep the pad in place and also provide mild compression. For the torso, about the only recourse is to use tape when the adhesion lessens. I don’t think that silicone liquids could do much good but have not tried them. The silicone must be in contact with the skin at least 12 hours a day for 3 months to see any results. A liquid or cream would just get wiped off.
This product is so helpful for keloid scars. I have three on my chest, back and shoulder. I pretty much keep them covered most of the time – almost more as protection against clothing, seat belts, purse straps, etc. They have flattened some over time but I’ve had them for years and when they are uncovered for any length of time, they become red and irritated again. I get a box about once a month or every six weeks. The instructions say they can be washed and reused but they get gross from rubbing on clothes after awhile. The little bottle of vitamin E oil really goes to waste – I’ve probably thrown out a dozen of them. Also, the instructions say to wear for 12 hours and then take it off for 12 hours and apply the oil. That’s more “on and off” than my scars can take but still, this is the most effective product I’ve ever used on them in 40 plus years.
Dermatrix Ultra Advanced Scar Care 8/10
I have been using this product for almost a month but have not seen an improvement yet. I got my scar from a previous liposuction. They are red and raised above and around the incisions I will keep using this product for another 2 months and see what happens.
I’ve used Dermatix Ultra consistently for about 6 months. I have raised scarring on my chest and was hoping for something to aid in the discoloration of the scars, a cessation of the burning sensation associated with raised scars, and possibly the flattening of my raised scars. This gel was successful in treating the burning/stinging sensation that I experience through my scars, however, this I feel, can be achieved through consistently using any sort of silicone based scar gel. So far, I’ve used Dermatix Ultra (the most expensive), Kelocote (average priced), and New Scar Therapy Topical Gel (very cheap). While there is a noticeable difference in the quality of this gel from the cheapest one I’ve used, I think at the end of the day, the cost was not worth the (lack of) results. I’m moving on to silicone based patches in hopes for better results.
My child was involved in an accident and suffered a very nasty laceration on the front of her lower leg. The resulting scar was about 10 inches long and jagged in spots. We tried many different cremes and gels (including Mederma…which did nothing) before someone told us about the Dermatix. We have seen positive results using this product. The appearance of the scar has lessened and we will continue using it. My wife has also used it in several smaller spots where moles were removed and it has worked equally well on those spots.
Circa Silicone Gel Sheeting 8/10
This product was applied post-surgery by my hand therapist. By the time the wound healed I was already forming a 1/2″ long “ropy” spot in the scar, as well as considerable other ugly features. Both the therapist & I are thrilled with the reduction so far – the raised area is down to one small spot, and the overall appearance is much improved. It has even reduced the old scarring from a burn adjacent to the incision.
The only issue I have is that the patch needs to be replace every 10-12 days – I haven’t seen anything near 28 days of use in spite of being careful about washing and covering it.
This product is superior in performance to the other OTC scar products I have used after several previous surgeries.
I’ve tried it for almost 3 weeks, it seems to make the scar heal better, and have flattened or even out some parts. Except it starts to peel after 8 days, doesn’t last as long as 28 days like it says. But overall it’s a good product.
I have used many (and I mean many) scar care products over the past couple of years, but the Cica Care Gel Sheets are by far and away the BEST product that have encountered. I just wish they would market it to the general public more.
KeloCote Advanced Formula Scar Gel 8.5/10:
This product is amazing for old & new scars. Just make sure you use it twice a day diligently. Even my doc is surprised how well my old scar is looking. I definitely attribute it to kelo cote.
This gel is great! I have been using for a week and the scar from surgery I had last August has gotten lighter and flatter. The scar I have is really dark and thick and this gel has significantly improved its appearance. The gel takes awhile to dry so if you are going to apply to face or any other parts of your body that might come in contact with clothes do apply way before you go out or put clothes on. The gel has not discolored any of my clothes so that’s a plus. Try it and hopefully it works wonders for you as it has for me. :
I have used this scar gel for about 2 weeks and I can already see a difference!! Kelo-Cote is amazing!!!
Mederma 9/10
You will definitely see an improvement in your scars. I repeat that again with emphasis: you will see an improvement. I have to tell you that the improvement won’t be until you use maybe five or more tubes over five months. The tube is not that large and it doesn’t last all that long. It is costly, no matter where you buy it–the Internet or your local store. But, it…
it didnt change the color of my scars, it stimply made them less keloid-like. It basically helps for raised scars, not discoloration scarring.
My daughter burned her forehead with a curling iron. She is bi-racial, and the scar was white……therefore, the scar was extremely noticeable. Her doctor and the pharmacist said that Mederma is the best stuff to use. It’s very expensive, but very worth it. My daughter was self-conscious about the scar at first. We’ve used Mederma several times a day for the last three months, and the scar is almost completely gone. It’s not even noticeable now!
