Neuromas are constant pain that feels like you have a knot in your foot and nothing will take care of the pain. Maybe you have had a cortisone shot and it did not work or maybe you are looking to avoid the shot or surgery. Can orthotics actually work for Mortons Neuromas or Neuromas in general? The answer is in some cases yes, they can help reduce your pain. Obviously an orthotic is incapable of curing a Neuroma. But what would you look for in an orthotic that can help with Neuroma discomfort?
The number one and by far most important feature in these orthotics is that they off load the metatarsal area of the foot. The off loading of the metatarsal layer of the foot will help reduce the pain and discomfort and also take pressure off your forefoot region. This is mainly done via a metatarsal pad implanted within the orthotic which can help reduce the discomfort and take pressure off the area.
One orthotic I tend to recommend for this issue is a New Balance Pressure Relief Orthotic. This has an implanted metatarsal pad and is especially designed to take pressure off the forefoot.
Now for people who are on their feet all day such as nurses, or people who have to perform a great deal of ambulation placing constant pressure on your forefoot you may want to consider these. These orthotics were actually specifically designed for the nurse’s with Neuroma issues
One other orthotic that I can recommend for this situation is the Pedag orthotic. This might be the most comfortable of the orthotics listed above as it provides the off loading that is ideal for a neuroma. This also is a very comfortable orthotic as well.
