Turf Toe is a condition of the big toe joint which is caused by hyper extension at the joint. Traditional therapy includes rest, bracing and taping. Another therapy commonly used is orthotics. But only specific orthotics can be successful in treating Turf Toe. The orthotic must limit motion of the big toe joint. If the orthotic does not limit the motion of the big toe joint the orthotic will be no help in treating Turf Toe. One option for treating turf toe is to see a Podiatrist and have an orthotic specifically made your your foot, with a “morton’s extension” (fancy name for a plate that goes under the orthotic and under your big toe joint). These orthotics can run upwards of $600 although in some instances insurance will cover them.
One orthotic that is effective for Turf Toe is the orthotic pictured below (click on picture for more information), this orthotic is specifically made for Turf Toe and is semi rigid to help protect against the jamming of the toe
An orthotic that fits the bill, are orthotics orginially made to treat Hallux Limitus. These orthotics below will help limit the flexion and extension of the big toe joint during activity. These are really the only ones on the market that I could find for treating turf toe. They are available from Amazon here:
