Ice Skates for bunions can be hard to find. In this article, I attempt to provide some examples for ice skates that can be worn comfortably by people with bunions. The key to finding an ice skate for a bunion sufferer is you need an ice skate with a wide and large toe box. The tighter your ice skates, the more pressure you will have on your bunion which will aggravate their bursa and cause pain. One thing you might want to consider is wearing a bunion splint when you ice skate. It will hold your toe straight and shield your toe from rubbing against the skate causing pain and discomfort.
Below I have posted some examples of ice skates that meet the criteria and would be the best ones for people with bunions.
Bauer Nexus 200 and 800– These ice skates have the largest toe boxes on the market. If you have severe bunion deformities requiring a wide toe box, these are the ice skates you need. While they may not be the most fashionable, they will comfortably fit your bunion. These ice skates also features a molded EVA footbed to help acclimate your bunion even more.
Jackson Ultima/GAM Stella/Clasicue Women’s Mens- These ice skates also feature a wide toe box, not as much as the Bauer Nexus, but still fairly large. These skates are more fashionable than the Bauer Nexus. If you have a mild to moderate bunion deformity these ice skates will be fine for you. I would avoid them and go with the Bauer Nexus for a severe deformity
Bladerunner Ice by Rollerblade- This skate is also effective in comfortably fitting a bunion deformity. These Bladerunners do have one advantage over the two skates above. These ice skates feature an outsole with a pump, which helps dissipate stress and irritation on the bunion. This is an option even for severe bunion deformities because of that injected outsole as well as having a wide toe box.
