Finding the right orthotics for a child can be difficult. Pediatric feet are all different and unique. Ideally, you could get a custom orthotic from a Podiatrist. Custom orthotics from a Podiatrist are when a Podiatrist takes an imprint or impression of your child’s foot creating an orthotic However, these orthotics tend to be expensive running between 450 and 600 dollars. Also, because your child is still growing you are paying a lot of money for an orthotic you may only get a year or two action out of until your child outgrows it. There are alternatives that can be just as effective as custom orthotics and those are over the counter orthotics created specfically for children. When looking for a child’s orthotic you want to consider a couple of important traits:
Comfort- Children are finicky. If an orthotic is uncomfortable they will not wear it. The orthotic you choose for your child must be comfortable in order for your child to wear it.
You want an orthotic that guides your child’s foot growth, not forcing it to a particular shape. Too many times I see children with flat feet wearing an orthotic with a high arch. That is the worst thing you can do for your child. You want an orthotic that guides your child’s foot.
Functional- Do not just get some cheap Dr. Scholls orthotic that does not accomplish anything. You need an orthotic that actually contributes biomechanically to your child’s foot
Here are what I think are the best Pediatric Orthotics:
Kids Children EVA Orthotic Insoles– If you have child with flat feet, these Orthotics maybe the direction you want to go. These orthotics are made utilizing the material known as EVA. EVA will mold and contour to the shape of your child’s foot. This will allow your child’s foot to grow while being augmented by an orthotic.
Spenco Kids Premium Polysorb– If your child does not have flat feet but just suffers from Severs disease, or your child’s feet feel tired, consider these polysorb orthotics. They are by far the most comfortable orthotic you will find on the market. If you are worried about your child being finnicky and not wearing their orthotic, this is also the orthotic you want to purchase for them as it is the most comfortable available for children.
Powerstep ProTech Powerkids orthotic– This is the closest thing you will find to a custom orthotic on the internet. The design and make of these orthotics is the closest you will find to a 300 dollar pair of custom orthotics. This has a polypropilene shell with a top cover. These provide both support, comfort, and function; the best of any pediatric orthotic you will find.
