Bunions are a common problem afflicting millions of Americans. There are a lot of myths and statements out there about their causes. The fact is there are not many causes of bunions and 90% or more of bunions can be chalked to one primary cause. But in this article I attempt to discuss what are the three biggest causes of bunions. Below are the three most common causes of Bunions:
3. Trauma- Yes you can injure yourself in such a way that you start to develop a bunion. This can be done by injuring a tendon or ligaments that effects the biomechanics of the foot, which will in turn lead to bunion development. This is an extremely rare cause and really you need a ton of bad luck to happen to have a bunion caused by trauma.
2. High Heels (Shoes)- This is a lot rarer than pop culture would have you believe. While there are sound biomechanical principles that can cause bunions to be formed by repeated shoe wear, you would almost have to wear high heels for about 20 years in a row and even then the chance of developing a bunion are low. Believe me, this has been studied backwards and forwards. The primary cause of bunions is:
1. Genetics- Yup, blame your parents. The vast majority of bunions greater than 90% can be chalked up to genetics. There have been multiple studies affirming this. There is nothing you can do to prevent a bunion in this situation as well.
