Hallux Limitus or Hallux Rigidus is a painful condition that effects thousands of people every day. It is caused by arthritic changes within the big toe joint which leads to pain with range of motion of the big toe. The big toe will also suffer from a limited range of motion due to the condition of Hallux Rigidus. There are a myraid of treatments for hallux limitus: From cortisone shots to NSAIDS. All are options in the treatment of hallux limitus. Heck they even make orthotics specifically for this condition:
Now a simple task that can be performed to help with the pain of Hallux Rigidus is to wear better quality shoes. There are many different types of shoes that can be worn in hallux limitus or rigidus that will help with the discomfort. What you want to look for in a shoe that is ideal for hallux limitus is a shoe that has a solid sole. You do not want a shoe that features a flimsy sole as that can lead to further discomfort. You also want a large toe box. Generally Hallux limitus will lead to an enlargement around the big toe joint, so the larger the toe the more comfort you will fill. Now the most important aspect when looking for a shoe with hallux limitus is to find a shoe that has a rocker bottom sole. A rocker bottom will take stress and tension off the big toe joint. This will lead to less discomfort and allow you to walk long distances with minimal pain. Below I have listed a couple of examples of ideal shoes for people with hallux limitus.
Ryn Sport Athletic Walking Shoe-I chose this shoe first. Take a look at the rocker bottom noted on the bottom of the shoe. This is a classic rocker bottom shoe. Now, obviously it does have an orthopedic shoe type appearance but this shoe can be very functional if you are suffering from severe hallux rigidus and have tried multiple shoes unsuccesfully.
Alegria Bree Solid– This again is a typical rocker bottom shoe but is not nearly as pronounced at the Ryn. So, if you are looking for a rocker bottom without as much of an orthopedic shoe look, this maybe the way to go.
Ryn Trail Walking Shoes– If you have hallux limitus or rigidus you may want to seriously consider taking a look at the Ryn line of shoes and sneakers. They are almost all rocker bottoms with a large toe box.
Sketchers Women’s Fashion Sneaker– Again we have a typical rocker bottom with a large toe box. (I think you are getting the idea of what to look for)
