How to ice Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is the inflammation of the growth plate in the heel of the foot.  One of the ways that you can treat Sever’s disease is to ice it down to reduce the inflammation occuring in the growth plate of your child.  There are multiple methods to icing Sever’s disease. Since the heel is not an easy place to ice, it is hard to hold an ice pack on the heel.  But there are some products that can make icing down Sever’s disease easier.

There are some products that can be used when not ambulating or walking.  These products have velcro over the ankle and have the ice located in the heel.  These products are very comfortable and easy to use.  Some of these products can be walked on but it is not recommeneded.  However, if you just want to lay down on the couch and ice down Sever’s disease these products maybe worth it.  As Sever’s disease tends to effect kids between the ages of 10-15, this will help the compliance method, as they can sit on the couch and watch TV or play on the IPAD.

Now a somewhat new option on the market for icing down Sever’s disease is the Icy Feet Blue Unisex pad.  This method of icing Severs disease allows your child to ice down the Sever’s while playing his sport or activity that is most likely causing the Sever’s disease.  This method maybe able to reduce the pain and distress your child is feeling while he is playing the sport.  If you are looking for an out of the box treatment for Sever’s disease this maybe the treatment for you.  Provide ice to your child’s heel at all times.
